3 years.3 years since she had last seen him. She wondered if he'd changed at all, or if he'd even remember her for that matter. They hadn't parted on the most pleasant of terms; a punch to the face wasn't exactly Kaori's idea of a nice farewell. When she closed her eyes, she could still feel the sting of his fist hitting her jaw in her mind. What a way to end a 7 year friendship. They rarely have saw each other due to the distance between them but for 7 long years, they had managed to sustain a friendship. She had stood by him through everything but when she found out what he had done, and what he was planning to do, well, that was the final straw. Hatred and vengeance she could understand but what Kita was planning was just plain murder, simple as. His target's only crime was being born.
Kaori's flaming red hair blew behind her like a veil, the icy gusts catching it from beneath. She looked at the directions she had written down; their meeting point wasn't too far now. Her stomach ached; she hadn't expected to be nervous about this but it was a big event for her. She'd cut off pretty much everyone from her childhood except for Kita.
Arriving at her destination, Kaori sat down on the cracked wooden bench, it was slightly damp from the cold in the air. Still no sign of her companion; some things never changed. She thought about what to say to him; how do you greet someone you told you hated and vowed never to speak to again? She pulled out her water bottle and placed it to her lips; a tiny trickle poured down her throat. Kaori looked at the bottle confused; she'd only filled it up an hour ago. A crystalline block sat in the middle of the bottle; frozen already. Such was the weather of Kirigakure. She'd grown accustomed to the tropics of Konoha that the permanent frost of Kiri was unnatural now.

Kita banged his head against the wall several times, clutching the crumpled letter in his hand. He's read it so many times now he could recite it from memory.
You've probably forgotten all about me by now.....
How could she possibly say something like that? aside from Mizuki, Kaori was one of the few friends he had as a kid. Despite his friendly and outgoing nature, noone ever really took to Kita. People were nice to his face but backstabbed him the minute he turned away. When he found someone who genuinely cared, he stuck by them. It was he who thought Kaori had forgotten about him, afterall, she did vow to hate him for the rest of her life. At that moment, he'd lost his temper and did the only thing he knew how to when angered - he lashed out. His hard knuckle smacking her delicate face. He'd hated himself for that. He hated himself more for just turning his back on her and walking away.
He didn't know whether to go or not. He could use Ikara as an excuse, tell Kaori she was too sick for him to leave her. Kita turned to look at his sister who was sleeping soundly on the bed; her thumb pressed just below her lips and her legs curled up, hugging her body. Looking at her now, you'd never imagine the horrors she'd went through.
"5 minutes....." He told himself. That's all he would stay for then he'd make his excused and leave. He couldn't bare to look at her.
He grabbed the red hooded jumped from the back of the chair and slipped it over his head, the fleecey lining was sure to save him from the icy air outside.
It was beginning to get dark and the streetlamps began to light up. Kita buried his hands in his pockets, fidgetting with a penny he'd found in one of them. He was over an hour late and he figured Kaori had probably left by now. But he'd never forgive himself if he didn't at least check. Heading round the corner, he could make out the faint silhouette in the distance, sitting cross-legged on one of the benches. He couldn't even make out the shadowed figures face but he new instantly it was her.

It was already after 8 and the icy air was biting at Kaori's bare shins. It had been a foolish idea to wear cut off jeans in this weather. Kita was supposed to meet her at 7 but there was still no sign of him. He was never one for being on time but he was never this late. She figured this was a sign that their friendship was never to reblossom and that it had forever withered and died.
Kaori pulled her crossed legs close to her; her arms and hands shielded from the elements by the too long sleeves of her black and pink striped jumper. She hung her head in sorrow; she had hoped to have saw him one last time. Even if just for a few minutes. Even if it was for him to tell her that he never wished to see her again. She needed closure in order to move on from her past and now he was the only one who could give her it.
She raised her head slowly and winced as the howling wind caught her eyes. In the distance, she saw someone stare at her. Her negativity told her it was just a passer in the street but her heart told her it was Kita; that he had come afterall

"Im surprised you waited...." Kita's voice was quiet and distant, almost a complete opposite to the normal friendly and outgoing aura that surrounded him. He sat on the edge of the bench, keeping his distance from Kaori; he recalled how she had personal space issues and hated anyone intruding on what she called her "sanctuary".
Awkward...... Kita thought to himself as the silence deafened them.

A small smile played on Kaori's lips, her elfish face brightening up at the blonde-haired young man who was towering over her. She noticed how he still remembered her hatred of people getting too close, keeping his distance a few feet away. He hadn't changed a bit; at least not appearance wise anyway. His hair had been darker as far as she could recall but that had always been Kita's way. He was impatient and got bored easily so it was only to be expected that his hair would change as often as his mind and opinions. Even in the dim light she could still tell that he had retained his looks, perhaps even gotten better looking in the few years since she had seen him. She wasn't afraid to admit to herself that she had always harboured a small crush towards him.
"It's ok...you can come closer...." She spoke softly. "And I know you too well to know that you would stand me up. You may act callous and cold but you still have a warm heart Kita," She smiled sweetly, looking up at him. She pulled her legs in closer to her, trying to keep warm.

Kita felt his cheeks flush a little at her backwards compliment. He edged closer to her so that they he was sitting just a few inches away from her feet; it was much easier to hear her speak now. Proud as she may be, Kaori's voice had never been loud nor overpowering. "You know....i had a whole excuse ready for you so that i could leave early......" he smirked, trying to ease the tension, "Guess i was just scared you'd slit my throat or something worse..." Her calm nature and relaxed manner told Kita he had been worrying unneccesarily. Perhaps there was hope for them afterall. She didn't seem to harbour a grudge towards him. He shivered a little as the temperature dropped further

Kaori noticed the goosepimples forming on Kita's toned arm, and the similar bumps that were appearing on hers, followed by a shiver simultaneously from them. The temperature was rapidly dropping and if they stayed out any longer, they were bound to fall ill. "Isn't there anywhere warmer we can go?" She rubbed her arms in a bid to keep herself warm. Again, she had learned the hardway that he choice of clothing was a bad idea. The thin straps of her black and white top were defenceless against the weather.

Kita noticed how cold Kaori appeared to be; she was trying not to shiver but her efforts were clearly in vain. "Come on," He smiled at her, gesturing for her to stand up, "We can go back to the hotel I'm staying at!"
He took his hooded top off and put it around her shoulders; it may have been far too big for her but it was better protection than the flimsy top she was wearing now.
"I thought you dressed for comfort, not for fashion," he taunted her.

"Uh....your hotel?" Kaori stammered. This made her nervous. She knew Kita liked to flirt but never had he been so open. She was rather wary of following him. "Um......." She paused, thinking the situation through. She could either sit here and freeze and reminisce with Kita, or she could go back to the hotel and be warm, but run the risk of having more arguments with him.
She smiled though when he put his jumper around her shoulders to keep her warm but simultaneously, his intentions became even more dubious

Kita smirked at Kaori's naive reaction; he knew from her traumatised facial expression exactly what she was thinking. His flirty personality was perhaps his greatest downfall as it often lead to misinterpreted intentions.
"Oooor we could just sit in the hotel bar......" He suggested, hopefully easing off some of her uneasyness.
He was beginning to regret giving her his jumper. The goosepimples on his arms were obvious as the frosty air nipped at his skin. His black t-shirt was barely enough to keep him alive in such conditions. He should have known better by now that Kirigakure was no place for summer fashions.
