~* I figured the “Help” section would be the most appropriate place to put this, hopefully I was right. I can’t help but think that I haven’t been able to do much as far as Moderating goes ‘cause it seems like everyone beats me to everything, and I feel pretty bad so I figured that offering some information would at least by a way that I could help out.
Okay, so I’ve been looking over the Jutsus board lately, and I decided to write a little bit about my own understanding on the Jutsu and stuff displayed in the Naruto Series. So, I’m just going to go ahead and kick this off and hope it helps some people out.
First of all, there are five Chakra Natures, or more commonly referred to as Elements. These are Fire (Katon), Water (Suuiton), Wind (Fuuton), Lightning (Raiton), and Earth (Doton). There is also Wood (Mokuton) and Ice (Yukiton), though those are rarer chakra natures (I personally don’t believe them to be actual Chakra Natures) and, to my knowledge, the only character in the Naruto series that uses Mokuton is Yamato. Now, I personally have some disagreement with the fact that there’s both Water-style and Ice-style, seeing as how Ice is Water; to me, it would all fall under the same category, since I’d think one would be able to have a Water Chakra Nature and make ice with it by influencing their chakra to lower the temperature to freezing, but that’s just my logic. In the series, though, there is separate Water and Ice. However, I do think that the Ice is in keen relation to Water, so despite Ice and Water being two separate styles, I do believe that Ice is under the category of a Water Chakra Nature.
Okay, so, as far as elements that I’d personally find acceptable… well, among the Chinese Zodiac, there’s Fire, Water, Earth, Wood, and Metal. To me, the elements in Naruto seem almost relating to that, except they don’t have Metal and they added Lightning and Wind (along with Ice, but that I don‘t believe that‘s considered a Chakra Nature). I’d personally think that Metal would be acceptable, since it’s the only one in the Chinese Zodiac elements that isn’t included in the series (thus far, it may appear later but there‘s no guarantee). However, having Metal-style techniques would probably be in relation to the Earth Chakra Nature. The five Chakra Natures displayed in Naruto are Fire, Water, Lightning, Earth, and Wind; I think that Ice, as stated before, ties in with a Water Chakra Nature although it is seen as a different element. If you notice, the five Chakra Natures cannot tie in with one another, they’re all of a completely separate category. You can’t categorize Water with Fire or Earth with Lightning, but you can categorize Ice with Water and Metal with Earth. So, as far as I’m concerned, as long as a Jutsu’s elemental nature ties in with or roots to one of the five Chakra Natures, that’s okay.
All right, so as a note, I think I should point out that it is said every Shinobi has a Chakra Nature, although some of them just haven’t figured out what they are yet. However, having multiple Chakra Natures is very, very rare. The Uchiha seem to have the ability to have a Fire Chakra Nature and a Lightning Chakra Nature, but to my understanding it’s only because their Sharingan allows the Chidori attack. The only character, that I am aware of, who actually mastered all five Charka Natures is Kakuzu of the Akatsuki, but in order to do so he stole hearts from the Shinobi who had different elements and utilized the Chakra Natures from the hearts. I don’t even think it’s possible to have all five Chakra Natures in the Naruto world naturally.
All right, moving on. Chakra Nature (elements) only applies to Ninjutsu. From my understanding, Ninjutsu is typically the manipulation of Elements, in other words the Shinobi’s personal Chakra Nature, but it’s also core ninja arts. There are Ninjutsu that are not influenced by a Chakra Nature. Ninjutsu, to my understanding, seems to deal with the physical yet it is in a sense supernatural in comparison to Taijutsu. Ninjutsu also requires hand-seals.
Genjutsu is more illusionary arts or a style that directly affects the opponent’s brain. There’s a lot one can do with the manipulation of one’s brain, so if you study up on brain functions you’d be surprised of what could be achieved with Genjutsu. They usually require hand seals, like Ninjutsu, but they aren’t influenced by Chakra Nature. In the words of LeafNinja.com, “Genjutsu is created when a ninja extends their chakra flow through the cerebral nervous system of their opponent to control their minds chakra, thereby affecting their five senses.” I do believe that pretty much describes it.
Taijutsu is a strictly physical ninja art that does not require hand seals nor necessarily the use of a lot of chakra. Under all circumstances, to my understanding, Chakra Nature does not tie in with Taijutsu, unless it is influenced by a Kekkei Genkai which is joined with Taijutsu style. Indeed, a Kekkei Genkai can be utilized during Taijutsu, and it often is.
Some other Jutsu Styles are…
Doujutsu ~ in other words, a Kekkei Genkai or Bloodline Limit.
Kinjutsu ~ forbiddon jutsu or “banned techniques”, Kinjutsu usually puts the user at risk; or, the nature of the chakra is immensely evil.
Fuuinjutsu ~ basically the sealing techniques.
